So I changed my oil in the truck for the first time since I bought it. First oil changes in a new to you vehicle, especially one that sat in a field for 4 years, are bound to be bad. But I didn't expect it to be this bad.

Kinja'd!!!

I pryed at the oil filter with all my might, and it wouldn't budge at all. I then went and hammered a Craftsman screwdriver through the oil filter, and it bent the goddamn screwdriver (admittedly, it was a thin one).

Kinja'd!!!

So I got some kroil (If you don't have like 6 cans of that stuff, go get it immediately), sprayed it on the filter gasket, went and got a thicker screwdriver, and was able to get the filter to budge. But it didn't rotate enough, so I had to drive the thicker screwdriver in a second place and try again. Finally got the old filter off and the new one on (with plenty of oil on the oil filter gasket). Unbleivable.

If a strap wrench doesn't work, I'd recommend one of these. Great grip and perfect for tight locations.

I use Kroil as well. What I don't like is the base of the nozzle thingy always leaks. Every can.

Yea I had a leather belt strap wrench, and it didn't even come close to making it budge. I'll look into that (but hopefully I'll never have to go through this again).

Or just buy a BMW. Easiest oil filter in the world to change. Twist off with adjustable wrench, and pull it out, easy as pie.

Kroil and penephite are fantastic products and worth the 2x price over pb blaster.

Only the problem on e30 m20 cars is that the spin off oil filter is located between the engine block and underneath the exhaust manifolds. I have a special pair of gloves just for the oil changes. M30 and M60 engines are the easy cartridge style though.

The same exact thing happened to me when I changed the oil in my Honda last time. Including bending a screw driver. But that was because someone else changed the oil last time, and put the oil filter on way too tightly.
